A disappointing loss where a draw seemed the more likely (and fairer) result. After a great start to this years Champions League campaign our passing today was awful. Yes, the pitch looked in bad shape and yes, it must have been near freezing out there - but CSKA played in the same pitch and in the same weather (regardless of whether they are used to it). Not an exceptable excuse, we are a world class outfit.
Our midfield seriously lacked sharpness for most of the match. Glimpses of the play we now expect from Fabregas were only displayed in a tantalising tease every so often and Rosicky started well but later faded. Djourou looked nervous throughout and was making some bad mistakes. Some show-stopping last-ditch tackles were pulled of by Gallas and Djourou which fortunately spared our blushes. However, it was great to see Clichy come on towards the end of the second half and play well after being out though that damned reoccurring foot injury.
Our attack never really looked like getting past CSKA’s impressive defense although Henry’s goal which was mistakenly disallowed because the ref thought he made a deliberate handball was robbery.
However, we must remember, this was the team that won the UEFA cup so contrary to popular belief, this was never going to be an easy game.
Regardless of the loss, everything is still going well enough and I look forward to some revenge when we entertain them on the 1st of November at home.
