Always my favourite match-up of the season, it never fails to excite, but in recent times it has been rare for us to do the double over them… until now
We started off looking shaky, and Man U dominated position to an extreme of over 80% at one stage. However, we managed to hold of any real threat of attack and they could only pull of 1 attempt (a weak attempt by Larson) until the dieing seconds of the half when Mad Jens pulled of a magnificent save from a Rooney shot.
A clear penalty for us was not given by Steve Bennett after Gary Neville clearly stuck his leg out in front of Thierry in the box without getting any contact of the ball whatsoever. How does Man U get away with it so often? They have always been the ‘darlings’ of the FA, and they probably always will be, but sometime the biased of decisions towards them is so obvious, it really does go beyond doubt.
United did eventually take the lead with a Rooney header. But with ten minutes left on the clock Van Persie got past Gary Neville to poach us back an equaliser, although according to an X-Ray immediately after the match Robin broke his fifth metatarsal bone in his right foot doing so. This is a huge shame for us as his introduction in the 67th minute really added to the strength of our attack and he has played out of skin recently. Early reports suggest he could be out for six-weeks, although lets hope that proves to be an exaggeration.
Let’s see if in this time Baptista can get a run of games and really find that form that Arsene is so confident he has.
With seconds of the match remaining, Eboue played a delightful one-two over the right wing and crossed a magnificent ball for Thierry to direct with a powerful header into the back of the net to seal the win, give us the three points and set the Emirates crowd on fire.
There was a record crowd at the Emirates for the match and they all saw our unbeaten home record kept alive. In the after-match interview Arsene summed up the win by saying "We won by never giving up" and that is clear for all to see. This win was not only another step forward for the character of this squad, but also for their belief.
