Season 2006/2007

Following our lads through their first season at the Emirates Stadium

Arsenal 1-1 Bolton

Kolo Toure gets us an equaliser to earn a 1-1 draw against bogey Bolton and pave the way for a tricky away FA Cup replay.

We played a soft first half, almost acknowledging the recently difficulties we have had playing against Bolton and five minutes into the second half Kevin Nolan scored after collecting Kevin Davies' rather fortunate cross (which looked more to be a soft shot).  Worryingly, he could have scored again were it not for Almunia expertly timing his dive to clear the ball from his feet. The way we were playing, had we gone behind two goals, I think it would have been unlikely that we got back into the match.

We did create one brilliant chance in the first half as Campo attempted to head back to Jaaskelainen with Thierry intercepting the ball and almost scoring with some breathtaking play, back heeled the ball on the volley only for it to be cleared of the line - Further proof (if any more was needed) that Thierry is on his way back to his best.

However, that reoccurring scenario of us going behind then really upping our game came about again. At last we pushed forward with intent and applied a sustained pressure which was rewarded when Toure dived to meet a cross and bounced a header over Jaaskelainen in the 78th minute.

We played the rest of the second half much better, passing well and having the odd shot on target, but ultimately, after our first half performance I’m sure the team would have been happy to have secured a draw and keep us in the Cup. A replay will not please Arsene with our already congested fixture list, but at least were still in the competition (one of our more realistic chances of silverware this season).

Some further bad news that has emerged is that Baptista picked up a groin strain in the match and will now join our ever-expanding list of injured player. Rumours are flying that this will force Arsene to make a last minute buy in the January transfer window, but we’ll have to see.

Let’s hope we shrug off this idea of Bolton being our bogey side and there is no love lost by giving them a good thumping in the away replay scheduled for Valentines day – 14th Feb.
