Season 2008/2009

  • Pre-season: Arsenal 3-1 Stuttgart

Samir Nasri made his Arsenal debut as we came from behind to secure a 3-1 win over Stuttgart.

All our goals came in the second half from Carlos Vela, Nicklas Bendtner and Jack Wilshere (again playing a blinder) after Yildiray Basturk had put Stuttgart ahead.

In addition to new signing Nasri pulling on a Gunners shirt for the first time (incidentially the first official outing of our yellow away kit), Emmanuel Adebayor made his first pre-season appearance (looking rubbish...), while former Arsenal legend Lehmann was in goal for Stuttgart.

Lehmann easily collected an attempted chip from Robin van Persie in the 11th minute, before current Arsenal No.1 Manuel Almunia made a smart save at the near post from Romania striker Ciprian Marica and Nasri fired a 25-yard effort over following a quick counter-attack.
    Brilliant reactions

Veteran Lehmann showed brilliant reactions to deny Theo Walcott from point-blank range after he was set up by Van Persie before Bendtner and Vela were introduced at half-time.

However, we were behind six minutes after the restart when Basturk drilled in a low strike from the edge of the box.

However, we quickly drew level, when Vela (who hit a hat-trick against a Burgenland XI on Monday) finished emphatically from Bendtner's pass. What a start Vela is making here...

Bendtner had scored four goals 48 hours earlier and chipped in with another pre-season goal when he poked the ball past Lehmann from Vela's pass on 65 minutes.

Wilshere, who had replaced Nasri on the hour mark, completed the scoring late on with his third goal in two appearances courtesy of a crisp shot.
  • Pre-season: Arsenal 10 -2 Burgenland

Arsenal put 10 goals past Burgenland. The scorers were Ramsey who scored 1, Bendtner 4, Vela 3, Wilshere 1, and the kid-wonder Walcott got 1. Overall a comfortable performance, although we did lose our concentration at the end letting them score 2, but even though, how can I grumble after scoring 10!

Vela scored a great hat-trick, Bentner played well (but can he do it under pressure?) and Jack Wilshere put on a tremendously mature performance.

Far better than the performance 1-1 against Szombathelyi Haladas where Theo scored the equalizer.

Just as I was starting to worry…
  • Pre-Season: Arsenal 2-1 Barnet

Our youngsters had a difficult game but came away with a 2-1 success over Barnet in our now familiar pre-season friendly.

Our first half performance lacked luster and included many of the first-team players like Manuel Almunia, Bacary Sagna, Gael Clichy, Theo Walcott, Nicklas Bendtner and a debut to £5million Aaron Ramsey.

However, Barnet opened the scoring and through Kenny Gillet, who beat Almunia down low at his near post... a bit worrying.

The second half was played with 11 substitutes and two of those players managed to find the back of the net as Arsenal claimed a 2-1 success.

Firstly Jay Simpson, who spent time with Millwall last season, finished off a fine move from eight yards out before teenage Dutch striker Nacer Barazite secured the win on 73 minutes.

I believe Barazite has been a steady success in the reserves and now deserves a chance in the first team to prove his worth on the big stage - but will Arsene give him the chance this season? If we have a similar nightmare with injuries to our strike force like last season then he may not have too much choice - Especially without any front playing signings so far.
  • Nasri finally signs from for an undisclosed fee

Finally Arsenal have confirmed the worst kept secret in transfer history, with the France international penning a long-term contract at the Emirates.

A deal had reportedly been struck towards the end of June after the player's official website announced the 21-year-old had secured his transfer to North London.

However, the statement proved to be premature, and was subsequently removed, sparking confusion over the progress of the switch.

But now the former Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year has sealed his protracted move to Arsenal for a reported fee in the region of £12million.

Nasri told the club's official website: "I'm very happy to become an Arsenal player, it means such a lot to me. This is a very important step in my life as a football player because Arsenal is a massive club.

"I really hope everything will go well for me here. I will be my best for Arsenal and its fans and I am honoured to be part of such a great football club."

Manager Arsene Wenger added: "We are delighted to be signing Samir Nasri. He is young, quick and technically an outstanding player.

"He has shown great potential with his performances for Marseille and the French national team over the past two seasons and he will add great quality to our squad."
  • Wenger "Patience will pay off"

Arsene Wenger feels we could be set to end our search for silverware.

We are without a trophy since we defeated Manchester United on penalties in the 2005 FA Cup final.

Last season, despite an impressive beginning to the campaign, we faltered at the final stages to end a third term empty-handed.

But Wenger is sure our patience in youth will soon pay dividends as he looks ahead to the 2008/09 season.

"In life you need to be patient to get to the very top," Wenger said in The Daily Telegraph.

"I still believe we have created something special. When you are a winner you come back."

  • Fabregas and Spain win Euro 2008

Cesc Fabregas has hailed the 'beautiful football' that propelled Spain to Euro 2008 success.

Spain claimed their first major international title in 44 years on Sunday after their 1-0 triumph over Germany.

The majority of the plaudits have been directed towards Spain's attacking mentality after Luis Aragones' men demonstrated outstanding technique throughout the tournament.

And Fabregas has lauded his team-mates, while admitting he has fulfilled a dream by lifting the European Championship trophy.

"This is the greatest day of my life," Fabregas said in The Sun. "44 years on and we have done it again. This is one the best trophies you can have and it is one of your dreams.

"It was a long time since a team of that quality, trying to get the ball on the ground and play beautiful football, went on to glory.

"Now we have made it - and you can [see] how young we are - we can now go on to fight for the World Cup in two years' time."
  • Clichy signs new Arsenal contract

Gael Clichy has signed a new "long-term" contract at The Emirates.

22-year-old Clichy has established himself as a regular in the side following Cashley chasing the dollar to Chelsea.
And Clichy - who made more first-team appearances than any other Arsenal player last season - has been rewarded with a new deal ending speculation linking him with a move to Italian sides Roma and Juventus.

Clichy has now made 146 appearances for us and was named in the Professional Footballers' Association team of the year at the end of last season.
The exact length of the new deal has not been established, but its always good to see a player of his quality commit.
  • Kolo Toure intends to see out his career at Arsenal

Ivory Coast defender Kolo Toure has stated that he intends to see out his career at Arsenal. Toure, who joined us in 2002, in my opinion our best defender. His versatile play has been unquestionably an integral part of the team.

"When I put the shirt on it means a lot of things for me," Toure told The Sun.
"I will be so glad to finish my career here.
"At the moment everything is going well."

With talk of Yaya (Kolo's younger brother currently playing a Barcelona) possibly joining him at Arsenal we could be at last looking at defence to rival the legendary back four of Dixon, Adams, Bould and Winterburn.

  • Rosicky struggling to regain fitness for the season start

Tomas Rosicky has revealed he may miss the start of the new Premier League season.

The Czech Republic international has been out since January with a knee injury and underwent surgery in May, ruling him out of Euro 2008.

The news up to this point suggested his recovery was going well but in fact, he may not be unable to join the rest of the Gunners for pre-season training.

Rosicky has said "It will be yet a long time before I return, but at the start of the new season - some time in August - I will hopefully start with training,"

  • Ramsey completes move to Gunners

Aaron Ramsey has completed his £5m move to Arsenal from Cardiff City, sticking it Man U who were so confident that in a show of their usual arrogance announced on their website that they had agreed terms with the Welsh club on Tuesday last week, even before anyone at Old Trafford had met the player.

Ramsey has signed a long-term deal at Arsenal after we flew him to Switzerland for face-to-face talks with Arsene at Euro 2008.
"He was a big factor in my decision to join Arsenal," said Ramsey. "I'm so happy to have signed for Arsenal."

Known as "Rambo", Ramsey progressed through the youth ranks at Cardiff City.

In April 2007, he became the youngest player to represent the Cardiff City aged 16 years and 124 days when he replaced Paul Parry in a 1-0 home defeat to Hull City. Since then, Ramsey went on to make a total of 22 appearances for the Welsh side, including a substitute appearance in last season's FA Cup Final against Portsmouth at Wembley Stadium.

"We're delighted to have signed Aaron Ramsey," said Arsene.
"He is a young player who has shown huge potential with his performances for both Cardiff City and Wales at Under-17 and Under-21 levels.
"He is still only 17, but has already shown that he is a very intelligent and mature player with great quality.
"Although he mainly plays in midfield, Aaron is a versatile player and can also play across the defence.
"We are all looking forward to welcoming Aaron to the Club for our pre-season preparations."
